Previously named Prey Nokor during the reign of the Khmer it was annexed by the Vietnamese in the 17th century and then became known as Saigon in the 1860’s when it served as the capital of the French Chochinchina colony and latterly the capital of Southern Vietnam from 1955 until the end of the Vietnam War in 1975 when it was renamed Ho Chi Minh City by the communist revolutionaries.
